Setting GRIT Goals II
Based on my personal experience, some limiting factors in achieving previously set goals were not putting efforts consistently be it in regard to school, work, and other stuffs, also fluctuating interest, as well as not getting support for what I do.
While the other factors in achieving previously set goals would be when I put in efforts consistently onto something that I’m keen at, influence of others – peers or classmates working hard to strive for the exams for example and when I get support even if it’s just a little.
The two goals that I have yet to put in effort, dedication, perseverance, and resilience are to be good at both baking and editing videos. These two goals are of my long-time goals- since secondary school. But I didn’t really have the opportunities to delve into these two things before polytechnic.
To accomplish these two goals based on the grit goal concept, I’d have to achieve both low and mid-level goals first. To be good at baking, I can explore or learn on my own by watching videos that I’m interested in - on how to bake a chocolate cake for example, or even go to basic classes of baking. The next level would be to be involved in hands-on baking, by buying the ingredients listed in the video and follow the steps on how to bake the cake as per the video. And, if I fail to make the cake as good as per the video, it’s fine. I can just try again till I manage to do it. If I’ve succeeded, the next step would be to try other recipes. The high-level goal of baking for me would be baking without having to really refer the steps in detail as a rookie of baking would.

For video editing, the low level would be, to try out the fundamentals of video editing like cutting, compiling two different videos into one and others. The next level would be to try and make a video of my own using the skills I’ve attained even though I’m not that good at the fundamentals. To be good at the fundamentals, one would have to try out again and again even though there are many failed attempts than successful ones. The top level of video editing for me would be being able to make and edit videos without feeling lost on which tool should be used.
The approaches to keep my goals in sight firstly, would be to make to-do-lists of the sub goals needed to be done, in order to reach the different levels of goals. I’d have to find out what was achieved in the to-do-lists and what did not. The ones that weren't achieved – I can either try again or go for other alternatives instead. Next would be to evaluate my progress. Doing this would encourage me to keep putting in effort towards my goals, mend my tactics, as well as giving me a sense of accomplishment for the sub goals or sub tasks I have fulfilled so far.
In short, I know that the path to reach my goals is not that easy, but the first step to reach my goals is to always try.
